A Bakersfield calligraphist is sharing the fine art of hand lettering in hopes a new skill will help local residents cope with the restrictions of COVID-19.

Offering a downloadable workbook with step by step instructions on modern calligraphy, Britny Boos says this project is taking the place of workshops she’d planned for 2020.

“As soon as the social distancing orders hit in March, I immediately had to postpone my workshop I had planned in collaboration with another small shop owner, Cloud 9 Coffee Company. This hit me hard.”

While nearly half of Boos’ students continued to support their teacher through the purchase of lettering kits or the rolling over of fees to a time when in-person lessons would be allowed, the artist knew she needed to do something more.

My hope is to inspire others to create and share the knowledge they already have inside them. Creativity isn’t limited to a paint brush and canvas, but takes on many mediums, forms, and expressions.

She hopes continuing her work online will show others struggling to find an outlet, that options do exist.
